In a surprising development, Head of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith yesterday called on the government to halt the spread of breakaway fundamentalist churches from US and bring them under control.

The Head of the Catholic Church charged that such churches, employing huge amounts of cash and through agents appointed throughout the country, were not only inducing Buddhists to convert, but were also preying on Catholics.

As part of their invasion of the country, a list of churches to be constructed, submitted by them to the Christian Affairs Ministry for registration, had been rejected through the intervention of the Bishops Council, the Cardinal noted.

He warned that if such bogus churches were allowed to spread unchecked they would hoodwink both Buddhists and Catholics and appealed to Catholics not to fall prey to them.
