FREEDOM OF SPEECH GOING TOO FAR

Thursday, 15 February 2007

I think of myself as a journalist, in some odd way. Because of this, I value freedom of speech and expression just as much, maybe more, than anyone else on this campus. But this “Preacher Bob” has taken things a little too far. Spreading the word of God is one thing, but to condemn a person to hell because she is in a sorority or was a cheerleader is completely wrong and judgmental.

He was actually quoted as saying “all sorority girls are whores and cheerleaders with their short skirts are going to hell.”

Forgive me if I am wrong, but aren’t Christians supposed to be non-judgmental, forgiving and compassionate towards everyone, even sinners?

And are we not taught in the Bible to love the sinner, hate the sin? Just wondering.

What I am confused about is whether I am a whore or not. You see, I always thought that not having sex and waiting until you were married to do so constituted you as not being a whore.

However, Preacher Bob says because I am a “sorority girl,” I am a whore.

I guess I need to go to the Greek Life office to see if they took my virginity along with my bid card three years ago.

If they did not, then I have got a lot of searching to do. That special someone must have been quite amazing for me not to know it even happened.

Seriously, I have never done “the deed,” and I do not appreciate someone who calls themself a Christian saying that I am a whore.

This is why people are turned off to religion, especially Christianity. People like Preacher Bob make you feel like there is no hope for you, no matter what you believe in or what is in your heart.

For some odd reason I thought that preachers were supposed to comfort and guide those searching for answers. Many people out there are suffering and don’t know where to turn.

You think they are going to turn to Christianity after listening to Preacher Bob on library lawn? I doubt it.

But just for kicks, I will assume a hypothetical situation.

Let’s pretend I was a complete and total whore. I wanted to have sex all the time — unprotected. I was even worse than the girl in “Sex and the City” on HBO. I needed it day and night.

Who is Preacher Bob to tell me I am going to hell?

Last time I checked the only person that decided that was God. But all that sex can confuse a person.

All right, back to reality. I know I am being sarcastic, but how can you take this guy seriously?

He isn’t motivating me in anyway. If anything I am ashamed to say I believe in the same religion as him.

I don’t want people to associate his so-called Christian behavior with the Christian behavior I believe in.

Here is a little hint to those “Christians” out there that agree with Preacher Bob: You are not attracting people to Christianity by calling them whores. You are dreaming if you think you are.

You bring people to the church by offering love, compassion and faith in his word.

At least that is what they taught me at Council Road Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.

Oh, and Preacher Bob, if you read this, next time you want to call me a whore, say it to my face. Don’t yell it all over campus. It is rude and inconsiderate, and the last time I checked the Bible said judging people was a sin.
