In his speech, Wickremesinghe reaffirmed his support for the Buddhist nationalist structure of the Sri Lankan state, maintaining that he is ‘constitutionally bound to give Buddhism the foremost place and accordingly protect and foster the Buddhasasana’ (Buddhist philosophy). Whilst he attempted to reassure non-Buddhist communities that their rights would be protected in Sri Lanka.
