The Tesla Cybertruck has been making waves with its futuristic design and electric powertrain. One intriguing feature is its retractable tonneau cover, which serves multiple purposes. While it’s designed to keep valuable items safe and enhance rear visibility when closed, there’s another critical aspect: efficiency.

When driving at high speeds, any electric vehicle’s range tends to drop compared to its advertised figure. However, with the Cybertruck, the tonneau cover plays a significant role. Car and Driver conducted tests with the powerful Cyberbeast-spec Cybertruck, equipped with a tri-motor setup, 35-inch all-terrain tires, and an estimated driving range of 320 miles according to Tesla.

Running with the tonneau cover open resulted in a range loss of about 25 miles at a constant speed of 75 mph. The energy consumption increased by almost 10% compared to driving with the tonneau closed. In other words, if you were on a long highway drive, leaving the tonneau open could reduce your real-world range from 250 miles to around 225 miles123.

So, while the Cybertruck’s tonneau cover adds versatility and style, it’s essential to consider its impact on efficiency during those long trips. Whether you’re hauling cargo or cruising down the highway, that retractable cover can make a big difference in how far you can go on a single charge!
