Ven. Watareka Vijitha Thero’s abduction claim is false — Police

The Police has stated that a complaint lodged by Venerable Watareka Vijitha Thero — claiming that he had been abducted and assaulted — has been found to be false.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana made this statement at a media briefing Sunday.
“When inquiries were made from a relative, he revealed that on the request of the monk, he had picked him up in his van at 2:30, taken him to Panadura and dropped him at this location. At the same time, the injuries sustained by the monk were examined by the Chief Judicial Medical Officer of Colombo and two Assistant Judicial Medical Officers who have reported that these were self inflicted injuries.”
He also added: “They say that the injuries were caused using a keychain that the monk had with him. There has been no vehicle in the area which resembled the description he had given in his statement. The van in question has been taken into the custody of the CCD or Colombo Crimes Division. The van is at this location.”

Following the briefing, the media was also granted the opportunity to see the van in which the monk had travelled.
Venerable Watareka Vijitha Thero, a member of the Mahiyanganaya Pradeshiya Sabha, was found lying on the roadside of a road in Bandaragama on Thursday morning.
The monk is continuing to receive treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo.
Meanwhile, the Police say they will not grant permission for any rallies or marches that could incite racial or religious hatred.
SSP Ajith Rohana speaking at a media briefing Sunday afternoon said the decision was made after considering recent events.
However, the police media spokesperson affirmed that this will not hinder the observance of other religious meetings.

අද පැවති මාධ්‍ය හමුව අවසානයේ උන්වහන්සේ ගමන් ගත් බවට පැවසෙන වාහනයේ ද දර්ශන ලබාගැනීමට ඉඩ ලබා දුන්නේය.
මහියංගනය ප්‍රාදේශීය සභා මන්ත්‍රී පූජ්‍ය වටරැක විජිත හිමියන් බණ්ඩාරගම ප්‍රදේශයේ මාර්ගයක් අසල වැටී සිටියදී පසුගිය බ්‍රහස්පතින්දා උදෑසන සොයා ගැනිණ.
