Guwahati: The Union home ministry on Friday issued show-cause notices to 568 NGOs from the northeast, asking them to explain why their licenses should not be cancelled for non-filing of the annual returns of foreign receipts.
Altogether 10,331 foreign-funded NGOs across the country have been issued such notices.
At 291, Manipur has the highest number of such NGOs in the region, followed by Assam (130). There are 56 such NGOs in Nagaland, 28 in Arunachal, 34 in Meghalaya, 14 in Tripura and 15 in Mizoram.
Most of these NGOs, which receive foreign funds, are Christian missionary, Islamic educational and healthcare organizations.
NGOs, which have not received foreign contribution in one particular year, are also required to furnish a nil return for that year within the aforesaid period.
