NOTE: Attention to Mahanayaka Theros and Sri Lankan Educators
As citizens of Sri Lanka, we cherish the values of equality, respect, and the preservation of our cultural heritage. Recent observations have brought to light a troubling trend within our national schools: the subtle promotion of religious ideals through extracurricular activities. Some teachers, driven by a belief that Buddhist children should learn about other faiths and their leaders, engage in activities such as analyzing the biographies of leaders from other religions and rewarding students who participate in multi-religious activities. While seemingly innocent, these activities risk alienating Buddhist children and sidelining the contributions of our national heroes.
It’s disheartening to note that the significant contributions of Buddhist heroes and those who prioritize Buddhism and Sinhala Buddhist culture are often overlooked or forgotten. When questioned, educators plead ignorance regarding these pivotal figures who have dedicated their lives to the propagation of Buddha Sasana and the protection of our motherland. This lack of awareness is concerning, considering the sacrifices made by these individuals in safeguarding our nation’s essence.
There exists a wealth of noble men and women, including Buddhist monks, who have selflessly devoted themselves to our country’s betterment and the preservation of our cultural identity. Their stories are not only inspiring but also crucial in instilling pride and belonging in younger generations. Yet, some educators, dubbed “Aragala Type Teachers,” seem reluctant to acknowledge or promote the biographies of these esteemed individuals, raising questions about their commitment to our society’s values and principles.
It’s imperative that we address this issue urgently. Our education system must be reformed to ensure it imparts knowledge while fostering a deep appreciation for our cultural heritage and the sacrifices made by those who came before us. While inclusivity and respect for diverse religious beliefs are important, it’s equally crucial to uphold the principles enshrined in our constitution, particularly the foremost place given to Buddha Sasana.
Educational authorities and teachers must adhere strictly to constitutional principles and refrain from engaging in any form of religious propaganda or activities that may inadvertently victimize children of a particular faith.
Let us demand accountability from our educators and institutions. Together, let’s ensure that the next generation grows up knowing and cherishing the true heroes of our nation, those who have dedicated their lives to upholding Buddhist ideals and preserving our country’s unique identity. Our schools should remain spaces of learning, tolerance, and unity, where every child feels valued and respected, and where the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage is celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
One notable quote attributed to Buddha about religion and faith is:
“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”-Buddha
This quote emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, rationality, and personal experience in evaluating beliefs rather than blindly accepting them based on tradition or authority.
