The gem industry in Sri Lanka has historically been a territory dominated by long established patriarchal networks, mass corporate exporters, and commission-hungry tour cartels that dictate the commercial market. For 25 years in the gem industry, Nilmini Liyanaarachchige, the pioneering CEO and Founder of Nilmini Gems & Gem Laboratory Kandy (Pvt) Ltd, has fiercely challenged this mainstream structure completely on her own terms. As a British FGA-qualified gemmologist and the historic winner of the UK’s prestigious Christie’s Prize for the best trade candidate of 2002, her elite background gave her the tools to build a private, trusted sanctuary where global collectors could bypass the high pressure traps of the commercial market. Today, that private space has transformed into an accessible, street level boutique luxury showroom located at No. 18, D.S. Senanayake Veediya, Kandy, operating under the signature theme that every jewel is a love letter.
Her strategic relocation is designed to bring absolute transparency directly to the street front, proving that elite gemmology should be open to anyone visiting Kandy, Srilanka. By operating under a unique “One Place, Two Services” framework, she explicitly opposes the greedy practices of private traders who exploit international travelers for quick, short-term earnings. When clients purchase bespoke jewelry or loose stones direct from mine to market, they do not rely on sales talk; they watch the gem undergo rigid, independent scientific testing right inside her state-of-the-art laboratory before leaving with a globally valid, certified report. This approach teaches a direct lesson to the local gem trading community that long-term integrity and scientific truth are far more sustainable than market manipulation.
This business model also serves as a direct message to the global luxury market that it is not just corporate Ceylon Gems or mass state collections that represent Sri Lankan wealth. The authentic soul and deep scientific knowledge of the island’s gem heritage live within independent specialists who refuse to compromise on quality, rather than inside faceless corporate boardrooms or high-volume export factories. Achieving this level of international success over a 25-year career has been a journey of pure grit for Nilmini, who built this global brand entirely through personal investments and individual gains without any mainstream support from the government level. Despite bringing historic international accolades home to Sri Lanka, specialized female business owners continue to face a glaring lack of state grants or structural backing to scale their talents globally. Fueled by a childhood dream to present the authentic Sri Lankan gem experience to the international market, her new street level milestone stands as an independent triumph, demonstrating that the true prestige of a Ceylon Gem is earned through unyielding truth and scientific excellence rather than corporate monopolies.
To provide an inside look at this industry shift, a journalist recently sat down with Nilmini Liyanaarachchige to discuss the reality of challenging the established gem trade:
Journalist: Twenty-five years in the gem industry is an incredible milestone, especially in an environment that has historically been dominated by male networks and commercial tour cartels. What sparked the definitive decision to change your approach and bring Nilmini Gems & Gem Laboratory Kandy (Pvt) Ltd out of the exclusive upper floors down to a new street-level boutique luxury showroom here at No. 18, D.S. Senanayake Veediya?
Nilmini Liyanaarachchige: Operating from the upper floors allowed us to build an incredibly private, highly trusted sanctuary over the last two decades. However, as we marked 25 years in this trade, I realized that true transparency shouldn’t be tucked away out of sight. The decision to relocate to the street level was about visibility, accessibility, and actively reclaiming our space in the open market. By bringing our bespoke luxury showroom and our independent scientific laboratory right to the street-front, we are making a proud statement that world class, uncompromised gemmology should be completely open and accessible to anyone walking through Kandy.
Journalist: Your new showroom centers on a beautiful and deeply poetic mantra that says every jewel is a love letter. In a trade that so frequently treats precious stones like cold commodities to be traded for high volume, how does this new physical space bring that romance back to life for your clients?
Nilmini Liyanaarachchige: A natural gemstone is a miracle forged deep within the Earth over millions of years, not just a simple mineral to be bought and sold. When a stone is ethically sourced direct from mine to market, scientifically verified, and custom-designed into a piece of fine jewelry, it becomes a wordless love letter passing from nature, through our hands, to the client. The ambient lighting, the intimate consultation areas, and the storytelling flow of this new boutique are all intentionally designed to honor that emotional journey. We want our guests to experience the true poetry and personal history behind the specific piece they are holding.
Journalist: You operate under a highly unique “One Place, Two Services” framework that combines a high-end luxury showroom with an independent scientific gem laboratory. How does this setup serve as a deliberate lesson to private traders who only focus on quick personal earnings and short term profits?
Nilmini Liyanaarachchige: The traditional gem community has severe structural flaws, with too many private traders relying on high-pressure sales talk and commission-heavy tour middlemen to exploit international travelers who visit our country. This short-term greed heavily damages the global reputation of Sri Lanka as a gem destination. Our model directly opposes these exploitative practices. When a client walks in, they do not have to rely on mere promises. They watch their gemstone undergo rigid, independent scientific testing right inside our state-of-the-art laboratory, and they leave with a globally valid certified report. The lesson I am teaching the local trading community is that integrity and scientific truth are far more sustainable and profitable than market manipulation, and it is the only way to build a 25-year legacy.
Journalist: When the international luxury market looks at Sri Lankan stones, the narrative is almost entirely dominated by massive corporate gem entities, mass-market exporters, and government collection agencies. What is your message to the global trade regarding this corporate monopoly over Ceylon Gems?
Nilmini Liyanaarachchige: My message to the world is direct and uncompromising because it is not just corporate Ceylon Gems or large mass exporters that represent our island’s wealth. The true soul, the artistic talent, and the deep scientific knowledge of our gem heritage live within independent, highly qualified specialists who refuse to compromise on quality. True luxury cannot be mass-produced by faceless corporate boardrooms or high-volume export factories that treat these stones like a cold collection. It is time for the international market to look past the massive corporate labels and recognize the raw, authentic independent talent that Sri Lanka has to offer.
Journalist: You achieved elite international recognition early in your career by winning the prestigious UK Christie’s Prize in 2002 as a British FGA-qualified gemmologist. Yet, you have scaled this global brand entirely through personal investments and individual gains. What is the raw reality regarding the lack of mainstream support from the government level for specialized female business owners in Sri Lanka?
Nilmini Liyanaarachchige: The reality is painful and it is an honest conversation we must have publicly. Despite bringing historic, international honors home to Sri Lanka, there has been a glaring, total lack of mainstream support from the government level for independent female entrepreneurs. There are no specialized economic frameworks, state-backed promotional grants, or structural systems tailored to help women business owners scale their technical talents to the world market. Everything we have achieved has been built out of pure personal grit and private funding. My childhood dream was never just to run a quiet boutique for personal gains, but to proudly present the authentic Sri Lankan gem experience to the international market on a grand scale. While my success has required great personal sacrifice, I am using this new street-level platform to show the global trade what a self-made Sri Lankan woman can achieve, even when the system remains entirely silent.
